United Methodist Open Door began in 1965 as United Methodist Urban Ministry of Wichita by a group of Methodist clergy and laity who sought to respond to the issues of poverty, including issues of racial justice, raised by the turmoil of that time. Today, Open Door serves approximately 38,210 unduplicated people each year through six programs located at three sites: Community Food Ministry, Commodity Supplemental Food Program, Klothes Kloset, Homeless Resource Center, Vision Quest homeless prevention program, and the Transitional Housing Program.

The leaders of Countryside Community Church, Dundee Presbyterian, Temple Israel, Kountze Memorial Lutheran, Trinity Cathedral, First United Methodist, St. Cecilia’s Cathedral, and many others organized the “Together” cooperative effort to meet the immediate needs of the hundreds of families that were struggling with the basic necessities of life: food, clothing, and shelter. However, our founders soon realized that thousands of families in Omaha need relief every day and opened the FREE services of Together to the community year round. This effort provided for ongoing human needs, primarily, the basic necessities of life: food and shelter.

For 33 years the Haven has fostered independence through our programs. The Haven is open 365 days per year and never charges for any of its services. We serve over 11,000 people from Vermont and New Hampshire per year generally from within a 45-mile radius of White River Junction, Vermont. Our clients are poverty level to low-income, as defined by the percentage of clients at or below 200% of the national poverty level. The Haven operates with 33 employees (25.4 FTEs), 641 community volunteers on regular shifts, and over 35 crucial community partnerships.

We serve the mission “We are a comprehensive homeless program that helps willing people regain dignity and independence”. The Samaritan Inn teaches self-sufficiency and life skills through its Transitional Residential Shelter Program to help people regain sustainable employment and permanent residency. In 2014, we sheltered 624 individuals, 218 children and 406 adults.

Today, the Road Home provides support and shelter for overcoming homelessness. We have a wide variety of programs that provide services to people. The Road Home operates out of The Salt Lake Community Shelter, the largest homeless shelter in Utah. We begin by providing people with basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter, while immediately working with them to develop a plan for housing. Our programs are designed to connect people with resources and help integrate them back into the community.
